BIOGRAPHY

Bas van Andel, born on September 12th 1990, is a drummer from the Netherlands. Coming from a non-musical family, he didn't have formal jazz education and until he was 18, he was mostly self taught. Upon hearing recordings of Jimmy Cobb and Philly Joe Jones, his attention was drawn to 50's and 60's jazz. His carreer started upon moving to Utrecht after high school, where he would study in the conservatory, being taught by Joost Kesselaar. At the time, he started occasionally playing gigs with fellow students as a sideman. Upon graduating, he started his own quartet. Later he traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana in the U.S., where he wasn't able to play any gigs, but he learned much from some of the local musicians and their performances. He studied with master drummer Herlin Riley, who used to play in many of Wynton Marsalis's formations. Riley got him listening to earlier players that were prominent in the rise of jazz such as Warren 'Baby' Dodds, Sidney Bechet and Paul Barbarin. Upon returning home, he had gained a new understanding of the roots of jazz and was dedicated to work his way up to be able to stand on the shoulders of his newly discovered giants. He started a trio with bass and saxophone and performed occasionally across the Netherlands. As a means to developing his musical set of skills in order to be able to become a (more) steaming, musical, dense, swinging drummer, he entered the Prins Claus Conservatory. September 2019, he departed to New York, where he opens up new boundaries and develop his abilities to a point where he is able to convey energy that doesn't seize.

BvA Trio

Eruptious, tasteful and an ability to turn on general steam.

Acoustic trio with drums, bass and saxophone. Playing the saxes is Spanish/Dutch tenorist; Miguel Sucasas. Sucasas plays post-Coltrane'ish, blues-based solos that ocassionally remind one of tenor legends like; Joe Henderson and Sonny Rollins. He knows how to drag response out of the rhythm section. The rhythm section brings ebullient forward momentum and a powerful clarity. They're making the trio sound energetically dense, yet authentically swinging in four. Drummer Bas van Andel bends the sound of the trio by tastefully alternating between counterpointing and verbative accompaniment. Ecuadorian bassist Yussif Barakat, excellently connects the dots, like sand filling up the gaps in a jar filled with marbles.
